Pursuing a Career in Scientific Research: A Personal Journey
Scientific research is often seen as a challenging, yet rewarding career choice. While many are drawn to science, few choose to make it their lifelong profession. The reasons for this hesitation often stem from the perception of limited job security, lower pay compared to other professions such as medicine or law, and the daunting prospect of long-term commitment to research work. However, I’d like to share my personal journey in scientific research and demonstrate why, despite these challenges, it is an incredibly fulfilling and impactful career path.
Why I Chose Scientific Research
My path to becoming a scientific researcher was not a typical one. Initially trained as a medical doctor, I specialized in gastroenterology. Despite the high earning potential and job stability in this field—many gastroenterologists in Hong Kong earn over a million dollars monthly—I decided to pursue a PhD in molecular biology, a move that might seem foolish to some. Why would I give up a lucrative medical career?
The answer lies in one man: Professor Dennis Lowe, who discovered in 1997 that a pregnant woman’s blood contains the DNA of her baby. This groundbreaking discovery shattered previous beliefs that the circulatory systems of the mother and fetus were completely separate. I was so inspired by this revelation that I wanted to contribute to furthering this field, particularly in the development of non-invasive prenatal testing. The potential to revolutionize prenatal diagnostics by extracting fetal DNA from the mother’s blood was something I could not ignore.
The Challenge and Breakthrough: Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing
Before this discovery, the only way to perform prenatal testing was through invasive procedures like amniocentesis, which carries risks such as miscarriage. However, Professor Lowe’s research showed that it was possible to detect fetal DNA in the mother’s blood plasma, offering a safer and non-invasive method of prenatal testing.
The challenge, however, was that the baby’s DNA constitutes only about 10% of the total DNA in the mother’s blood. This made it difficult to detect any chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome, accurately. When I began my PhD, my supervisor, Professor Lowe, encouraged me to work diligently because there were researchers around the world working on the same problem. If I was the second to solve it, I would be the first loser.
After 10 years of dedicated research, we developed an elegant solution that allowed us to detect Down syndrome with a 99.7% accuracy rate using DNA from the mother’s blood. This breakthrough was a major step forward in non-invasive prenatal testing and has since been adopted globally, with millions of tests performed each year.
Expanding the Technology: Cancer Detection
Once we had successfully applied our method for prenatal testing, we realized that the technology could also be used for detecting cancer. Just as the placenta shares similar invasiveness properties with a tumor, our method of detecting chromosomal abnormalities in the blood could be adapted to detect cancer.
We tested this concept using liver cancer and successfully identified chromosomal abnormalities in the blood that matched those in the tumor tissue. This breakthrough led to the development of a non-invasive cancer screening test, potentially allowing for earlier detection of various types of cancer, including nasopharyngeal cancer.
In a study involving 20,000 participants, we were able to detect 34 cases of nasopharyngeal cancer at an early stage. This is critical because early detection is often the key to curing cancer. The results of this study showed a 90% reduction in cancer mortality for those identified early through our screening method.
The Impact of Scientific Research
The impact of our work on prenatal testing and cancer detection cannot be overstated. Not only have we advanced scientific knowledge, but our inventions have also led to real-world applications that are saving lives. We have filed over 800 patents globally, bringing hundreds of millions of dollars in royalty income to Hong Kong and benefiting the scientific community at large.
However, the true impact lies in the potential to continue driving innovation in the future. As a result of our work, we have also created three companies, one of which merged in 2017 to become one of the most valuable companies in the biotech industry, worth $3.5 billion. This success has also allowed us to provide postgraduate training to young professionals, furthering the development of the next generation of scientists.
The Value of Scientific Research Careers
In my experience, a career in scientific research is not only intellectually rewarding but also offers numerous opportunities for growth, innovation, and societal impact. A good career should be interesting, challenging, and offer opportunities to make a positive impact on the world. Scientific research provides all of this.
Moreover, it offers a reasonable standard of living, and, contrary to popular belief, it can be financially rewarding. Many successful scientific researchers have made significant contributions to the world, both in terms of knowledge and financial success. Our work is proof that scientific research can be a highly fulfilling and lucrative career.
