How to Study Effectively — According to the Science of Learning
Learning is one of the brain’s most complex and fascinating processes. From memorising anatomy to mastering a new language, how we study directly influences how long knowledge stays with us. During their medical training, residents must memorise countless procedures that can one day save lives. In one 2006 study, surgical residents learning to suture arteries were divided into two groups. Both studied the same material, but with one small difference: one group spread out their practice sessions over several weeks, while the other crammed into a single day.
A month later, the spaced group performed significantly better during surgical tests. Their success revealed a powerful truth — how you study matters more than how long you study.
This finding aligns with modern neuroscience, which shows that effective studying strengthens memory by working with the brain’s natural learning rhythms.
How the Brain Stores Information
When you learn something new, say the anatomy of the heart, your brain encodes that information in the hippocampus — a region responsible for forming short-term memories. As you revisit the concept through studying or class discussion, the same neurons fire repeatedly, strengthening their connections.

Technique 3 — Space It Out (Spacing Effect)
The final method is spacing — reviewing material over multiple days or weeks rather than cramming.
Spacing allows the brain to consolidate learning during “offline” periods like sleep, when memories move from short-term to long-term storage. Each spaced review triggers reactivation of the memory, reinforcing it further.
Cramming before an exam may help short-term recall but fails to create durable knowledge. In contrast, spaced repetition ensures information remains accessible weeks or even months later.
This was the key difference in the medical resident study — both groups studied for the same total time, but the spaced group’s distributed practice led to lasting mastery.
