Then, about 66 million years ago, a catastrophic asteroid impact struck near modern-day Mexico. The explosion threw dust into the atmosphere, blocking sunlight and collapsing ecosystems. This event wiped out the dinosaurs and many other species — clearing the way for mammals to rise.
6 Million Years Ago: The Dawn of Humanity
Around six million years ago, the earliest human ancestors, known as Sahelanthropus, appeared. They likely walked on all fours, but by four million years ago, early humans began walking upright.
About three million years later, they crafted the first stone tools. By 800,000 years ago, they learned to control fire, giving them warmth, cooked food, and a means to protect themselves. Over time, human brains evolved rapidly, allowing for communication, cooperation, and innovation.
By 40,000 years ago, Homo sapiens were the only surviving human species.
