Career Pathway

Assistant SENCO / SEND Lead: The first step in your SEND leadership journey is usually as an Assistant SENCO or SEND Lead. This role allows you to gain hands-on experience while supporting the SENCO in managing SEND provision.
SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator): After gaining experience, you can advance to the SENCO role, leading the school’s SEND provision. You will be responsible for strategic planning, coordinating interventions, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
Inclusion Manager: Some SENCOs progress to Inclusion Manager roles, where their remit expands to oversee whole-school inclusion, diversity, and wellbeing initiatives.
SEND Consultant / Advisor: At the senior level, you can become a SEND Consultant or Advisor, providing expert guidance to schools, local authorities, or educational trusts. This role allows you to influence policy, improve SEND provision, and train education professionals.
