Mind Mapping: How to Think, Learn, and Remember More Effectively

Mind mapping is one of the simplest yet most powerful methods to take notes, organise ideas, and improve memory. It allows your brain to work naturally — visually, creatively, and associatively — instead of forcing it into rigid, linear note-taking structures that often block real learning.

For decades, many learners have filled notebooks with pages of text, trying to capture every detail. Yet, despite these efforts, much of that information is forgotten soon after. Mind mapping offers an alternative: a way to capture what matters most, make meaningful connections, and remember more with less effort.

The Problem with Traditional Note-Taking

For years, the speaker behind this idea — a mathematics PhD holder — struggled with memory while studying. Like most students, he wrote everything down word-for-word, worried he might forget something important.

However, traditional note-taking often turns learners into transcription machines. Whether typing or handwriting, people tend to copy information rather than think about it. This approach prevents true engagement. You may look busy, but your brain isn’t actively processing or organising the knowledge — it’s simply recording.

As a result, you miss key details, lose focus, and forget what you’ve written soon after.

How Mind Mapping Works

A mind map is a visual representation of information built around a single central topic. You start in the centre of a blank page (ideally placed horizontally), write your main idea, and draw branches outward for related concepts.

Each branch contains keywords or short phrases, not full sentences. These trigger your memory later and encourage you to focus only on what’s truly important.

As you create your mind map, you engage multiple parts of your brain:

  • Visual: seeing the layout, colours, and structure

  • Kinesthetic: using your hands to draw and connect ideas

  • Cognitive: thinking actively about relationships between concepts

Because each person’s thought process is unique, no two mind maps are alike. Two people can listen to the same lecture or read the same book, yet their maps will look completely different — and that’s the beauty of it. Each one reflects individual understanding and priorities.

Why It’s Better Than Linear Notes

Traditional outlines and long sentences don’t reflect how the brain stores information. Your brain doesn’t think in paragraphs or numbered lists — it thinks in images, keywords, and associations.

Mind mapping mirrors that process. It captures not just facts but also how those facts connect. These connections make recalling and explaining information much easier later on.

A Personal Discovery

After completing four degrees, including a PhD, the speaker discovered mind mapping and immediately realised how much easier his academic life could have been if he’d learned it earlier. The technique wasn’t widely known in the United States at the time but had already gained traction in the UK and Australia.

It worked, he found, because it aligns perfectly with how the brain learns. His own research in 1975 had already shown how visual and kinesthetic elements improved mathematical understanding — mind mapping applied that same principle to every subject.

How to Create a Mind Map

  1. Start with a blank sheet of paper placed horizontally (landscape).

  2. Write your main topic in the centre — it could be a lecture, a book title, or a question.

  3. Draw branches outward for key themes or subtopics.

  4. Add keywords or short phrases to each branch.

  5. Use colours, arrows, and symbols to connect related ideas.

  6. Keep it free-form and flexible. You can always return later to add new branches or connections.

This process keeps your thinking active and dynamic. You’re no longer copying information — you’re organising it, connecting it, and making sense of it as you go.

Real-Life Examples

The speaker shares two examples of mind mapping in action, both inspired by popular TED Talks:

  • Dan Barber’s “How I Fell in Love with a Fish”
    Instead of transcribing every word, he mapped Barber’s main points — from his changing views on sustainability to his discovery of naturally sustainable fish farming. The mind map highlighted the questions Barber asked (“What is sustainability?”, “Why do flamingos fly so far for food?”), which were key to his insights.

  • Sir Ken Robinson’s “Do Schools Kill Creativity?”
    The map captured Robinson’s key ideas: that children are naturally creative because they aren’t afraid to be wrong, that education systems often suppress that creativity, and that creativity should sit alongside literacy at the top of educational priorities. Branches even included memorable quotes and jokes that stood out personally.

In both examples, the mind maps made the talks easier to recall and explain later — far more effectively than pages of linear notes ever could.

Teaching and Sharing the Technique

Mind mapping isn’t just for personal study — it’s a tool worth sharing. The speaker recounts teaching the method to his granddaughter, who had been struggling with social studies. After mind mapping a chapter about the U.S. government, she earned her first ever A grade in the subject.

Years later, she remembered the lesson clearly — not just because of the colourful pens and drawings, but because it helped her truly understand what she was learning.

Final Thoughts: A Challenge to You

If you’ve never tried mind mapping, you might feel frustrated that no one showed it to you earlier. But the best time to start is now. It takes practice, but it quickly becomes second nature.
