  • Kitchen and bathroom sinks: 1½ to 2 inches

  • Showers and bathtubs: 2 inches

  • Main stacks: 3 or 4 inches depending on local building codes

These sizes help maintain proper flow and prevent backups in the drainage system.

2. Drains (Septic Systems)

Homes without municipal sewer connections rely on septic systems. In this setup, wastewater flows into a septic tank, which separates solids from liquids. The liquids drain into a leach field or drain field, where the soil naturally filters them. Over time, the solids in the tank need to be pumped out by a vacuum truck to keep the system functioning properly. Septic systems are common in rural areas where city sewage services are unavailable.

3. Drains (Venting Systems)

For drains to function efficiently, the system must be properly vented. When a toilet flushes or a sink drains, air pressure changes inside the pipes. Without proper venting, this can cause gurgling sounds, slow drainage, or even loss of the water seal in P-traps, allowing sewer gases to enter the home.

5. Potable Water (Private Wells)

In areas without municipal services, water is supplied through private wells. A well is a deep borehole, often drilled up to 500 feet, that accesses groundwater. A pump draws the water up, and a series of filters and treatments make it safe for drinking.
However, since the pump runs on electricity, a power outage can interrupt water supply — meaning a generator might be necessary to keep water flowing during outages.

6. Rainwater Management

Rainwater management prevents flooding and water damage around the house. In the past, stormwater and sewage used to share the same drainage systems, but modern designs keep them separate to improve efficiency.

When it rains, water from the roof flows into gutters and downspouts. These direct the water away from the foundation to avoid dampness or structural damage. Homeowners often extend their downspouts or install rain barrels to collect and reuse water for gardening.

Some systems also connect to French drains or weeping tiles, which collect groundwater and prevent basement flooding. However, connecting these directly to municipal sewers can overload the system, so it’s often better to let the soil absorb the rainwater naturally or use a rainwater harvesting system.

7. Sewage Treatment Process

Once wastewater and stormwater leave your property, they enter the municipal network. Along the way, they may pass through a lifting station, which pumps water back up when the pipes go too deep.
From there:

  • Rainwater is directed to nearby rivers or reservoirs.

  • Wastewater travels to a sewage treatment plant, where it goes through several filtration and purification stages before being safely released back into a river.

This cycle ensures water is continually cleaned, reused, and redistributed as safe drinking water through the city’s main supply.
