The Six Levels of Thinking: How to Learn Smarter, Not Harder

Every student or learner, regardless of age, operates at one of six levels of thinking — and each level leads to different results. The challenge is that most people get stuck at the lower levels, which limits their academic and professional success.

When we think at the wrong level, learning feels stressful and inefficient. We spend hours studying but still forget information or fail to perform at our best. This often leads to frustration and the mistaken belief that we’re “not smart enough.”

In reality, the problem isn’t intelligence — it’s thinking at the wrong level. Once you learn to think deliberately at the right one, you’ll retain more, understand deeper, and perform better. Let’s explore the six levels of thinking based on Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy, a framework originally developed in 1956 and later refined in 2001.

Level 1: Remember

The first level is Remembering, often called rote learning. It involves memorising facts, definitions, or formulas through repetition — such as rereading notes or using endless flashcards.

This kind of learning can feel monotonous and unproductive. It usually results in the lowest outcome: Regurgitation. You can list or define information, but you may not truly understand it.

While remembering is necessary for building a foundation, it’s not enough for deeper understanding or problem-solving. Most students stay stuck here, which is why studying feels tedious and ineffective.

Level 2: Understand

The second level is Understanding — grasping what the material actually means instead of simply repeating it.

Two people might use the same study method (like reading a textbook), but one may be reading to memorise, while the other is reading to understand the concept. The difference lies in intention.

At this stage, learners can explain processes, describe relationships, and interpret meaning. This is where true comprehension begins. Most school and early university assessments focus heavily on this level.

Level 3: Apply

The third level is Applying — using what you’ve learned to solve problems.

There are two types of application:

  • Simple problems, where you directly use a formula or concept (e.g., applying an equation in physics).

  • Complex problems, where multiple ideas must be combined or used strategically.

At Level 3, learners solve straightforward “one-to-one” problems — one concept for one solution. Practising quizzes, coding exercises, or sample problems helps solidify this level. It’s where learning starts to feel more practical

Level 4: Analyse

Level 4 marks the beginning of higher-order thinking. This level is about comparing, contrasting, and identifying relationships between concepts.

We call it Analysis — looking beyond isolated information to see how ideas connect. Techniques that promote this include:

  • Creating Venn diagrams

  • Making comparison tables

  • Using mind maps that show similarities and differences

When you reach this level, you achieve the Comparison Result — the ability to evaluate relationships between ideas, not just recall or apply them.

Interestingly, Bloom’s taxonomy was designed primarily for educators and exam writers, meaning most exams are built around these levels. By practising comparison-based questions (for example, through AI prompts such as “Generate Level 4 Bloom’s questions for microbiology”), you can train your brain to think like the people who design your exams.

However, Level 4 thinking requires more mental effort. Many learners avoid it because it feels harder and slower — a phenomenon known as the Misinterpreted Effort Hypothesis. In reality, this deeper thinking creates stronger, longer-lasting knowledge.

Level 5: Evaluate

Level 5 thinking is about Judgement — making decisions based on evidence, importance, and reasoning.

At this stage, you don’t just compare ideas; you prioritise them. You ask questions like:

  • “Why does this matter?”

  • “Which idea is more significant?”

  • “How do I justify my conclusion?”

This is called Evaluation, and it unlocks the Prioritisation Result — the ability to weigh options, form opinions, and justify decisions logically.

Level 5 thinking takes even more mental energy than Level 4, but it’s what separates good learners from top performers. It’s also the type of thinking required in postgraduate studies and leadership roles.

Mind maps, summaries, and teaching others are great tools at this level — but only if used critically. A mind map that simply connects terms isn’t Level 5; a mind map that evaluates which connections matter most is.

Level 6: Create

The highest level is Creation, where you synthesise new ideas from what you already know. This involves hypothesising — generating solutions or theories that didn’t exist before.

Level 6 thinking asks:

  • “What could I create using this knowledge?”

  • “What gaps exist, and how can I fill them?”

For most people, Level 6 isn’t essential unless you’re conducting advanced research or working in innovation-heavy fields. However, it’s valuable to recognise this stage as the ultimate goal of cognitive development.

How to Reach Level 5 and 6 Thinking

There are two main approaches to moving through the levels:

The Traditional Way (Bottom-Up)

Most learners start at Level 1 (Remember) and gradually progress through each stage. While logical, this method is time-consuming and often ineffective. As we move up, we forget earlier material due to knowledge decay — a natural phenomenon known as the forgetting curve.

This constant relearning wastes time and prevents mastery of higher levels.

The Better Way (Top-Down)

Instead of starting at the bottom, aim for Level 5 (Evaluate) and work downward.

When you think critically and make judgments, your brain naturally processes and stores information more deeply — allowing you to understand, remember, and apply it as a side effect.
