From intestines as long as a three-storey building to the lifetime production of enough saliva to fill a swimming pool, the human form is both marvellous and efficient. Even the dead skin cells you shed each year — around two-thirds of a kilogram — become tiny particles that support microscopic ecosystems in your home. To truly understand this “world,” we study two interconnected sciences — anatomy and physiology.
- Anatomy is the study of body structure — what the body is made of and how its parts are arranged.

Anatomy and physiology are rooted in chemistry and physics, requiring an understanding of how atoms, molecules, and energy interact within the body. They also rely on precise terminology, often derived from Latin and Greek, to describe locations and relationships between structures.
A Brief History of Anatomy
Our understanding of the human body has evolved over centuries — often in strange and secretive ways.
In ancient times, studying the human body directly was taboo. The Greek physician Galen in the 2nd century dissected pigs to infer human anatomy. Centuries later, Leonardo da Vinci produced intricate anatomical sketches based on dissections — until religious authorities ordered him to stop.
By the 17th and 18th centuries, public dissections became educational events attended by great artists like Michelangelo and Rembrandt. This enthusiasm led to a shortage of legal cadavers, fuelling a gruesome black market in grave-robbing. Britain eventually addressed this through the Anatomy Act of 1832, which permitted the use of executed criminals’ bodies for study.
Today, anatomy students legally work with donated bodies — “cadavers” — from individuals who have chosen to contribute to science. These generous donations remain a cornerstone of medical education.
Physiology: How the Body’s Parts Function
If anatomy tells us what the body is, physiology explains how it works. One of its fundamental principles is the complementarity of structure and function — meaning that the shape of a structure is perfectly suited to its purpose.
For instance:
- Blood flows in one direction through the heart because valves prevent backflow.
- Bones are hard and strong so they can protect softer tissues.
This concept applies to every level of the body, from cells to organs and systems.
The Hierarchy of Organization
The human body is a marvel of organised complexity, arranged in a clear hierarchy:
- Atoms and Molecules: The smallest units of matter, forming the building blocks of life.
- Cells: The basic units of life, each designed for specific tasks. For example, tiny red blood cells transport oxygen, while long motor neurons carry signals across the body.
- Tissues: Groups of similar cells working together — such as muscle, connective, nervous, and epithelial tissues.
- Organs: Combinations of tissues forming structures like the heart, lungs, and liver, each with a specialised function.
- Organ Systems: Groups of organs collaborating to perform major life processes — for instance, the digestive system, which turns food into energy.
- The Organism: The complete living being — you.
Your survival depends on this layered organisation functioning in perfect harmony.
Homeostasis: The Balance of Life
A major theme in physiology is homeostasis, the body’s ability to maintain stable internal conditions despite external changes.
Your body constantly regulates:
- Temperature
- Blood pressure
- Water and oxygen levels
- Nutrient balance
- Waste removal
When homeostasis fails — due to injury, illness, or severe environmental conditions — life is threatened. Whether it’s dehydration, starvation, or organ failure, every cause of death ultimately stems from the irreversible loss of homeostasis.
Anatomical Language: Mapping the Body
To describe the body accurately, anatomists developed a standard set of directional terms. These act as a universal map for identifying and locating structures.
In the anatomical position, the body stands upright, facing forward, with arms at the sides and palms facing out. From this position, we describe directions and planes:
- Planes of Division:
- Sagittal: divides the body into left and right parts.
- Coronal (frontal): divides front and back.
- Transverse (horizontal): divides top and bottom.
- Sagittal: divides the body into left and right parts.
- Directional Terms:
- Anterior (ventral) – front side
- Posterior (dorsal) – back side
- Superior (cranial) – toward the head
- Inferior (caudal) – toward the feet
- Medial – closer to the body’s centre line
- Lateral – farther from the centre
- Proximal – closer to the trunk (used for limbs)
- Distal – farther from the trunk
- Anterior (ventral) – front side
For example: the eyes are anterior to the brain, the heart is medial to the lungs, and the wrist is distal to the elbow.
This precise vocabulary ensures clarity in medicine. A surgeon won’t be told that a patient has an “achey belly,” but rather that there’s pain “inferior to the ribs and anterior to the spine.” Such precision can literally save lives.
