With 2G came the ability to send text messages. 3G brought us the internet on our phones, and 4G made video streaming, online gaming, and high-speed browsing a part of everyday life.

But as our digital demands have grown — with billions of devices connecting to networks every second — 4G has reached its limits. That’s where 5G, the fifth generation of wireless technology, steps in. Promising speeds up to ten times faster than 4G and the ability to handle 1,000 times more traffic, 5G is not just an upgrade — it’s the foundation for the next wave of innovation.

What Exactly Is 5G?

5G is the next evolution in mobile connectivity, currently being rolled out across major cities worldwide. While the difference between 3G and 4G was mostly about faster downloads, 5G represents a complete shift in how wireless communication works.

In Manchester’s Media City, one of the UK’s 5G-enabled hubs, we tested the Samsung Note 10 Plus 5G to see if the hype lived up to reality. The results were impressive: a 4G phone recorded a modest 2.38 Mbps download speed, while the 5G device clocked nearly 200 Mbps — a huge leap in performance.

But 5G isn’t just about speed. It’s about what that speed makes possible.

Speed and Latency: A Quantum Leap Forward

While 4G networks typically offer 10 to 20 megabits per second, 5G can reach up to 20 gigabits per second — up to 200 times faster. That means you could download a full HD movie in less than a second.

However, the real magic lies in its low latency — the delay between sending and receiving information. 5G networks can cut latency from 50 milliseconds on 4G to as little as 1 millisecond. In simple terms, this enables real-time interaction.

Imagine controlling a car on the other side of the world, performing a medical operation remotely, or participating in a video conference with zero lag. With 5G, that’s not science fiction — it’s the next stage of technological evolution.

The Possibilities Are Endless

The applications of 5G stretch far beyond faster streaming and smoother video calls. It’s the backbone for technologies that will define the future:

  • Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR): Immersive experiences that respond instantly to movement.

  • Autonomous Vehicles: Cars communicating with each other and with smart infrastructure to avoid collisions.

  • Internet of Things (IoT): Smart homes, factories, and cities connected by billions of sensors sharing data in real time.

  • Remote Surgery and Healthcare: Surgeons operating on patients across continents through robotic systems guided by instant feedback.

  • Industry and Automation: Factories where machines coordinate with each other seamlessly, boosting efficiency and safety.

In essence, 5G is not just connecting people — it’s connecting everything: devices, systems, tools, and environments.

The Challenges of 5G

Despite its potential, 5G faces technical and logistical hurdles. One of the biggest challenges lies in how it transmits data.

5G operates using a range of frequencies, including millimetre waves — ultra-high frequency signals that can transmit huge amounts of data but have limited range. Unlike 4G, which can cover several kilometres, millimetre waves struggle to travel more than a few hundred metres and cannot penetrate walls, trees, or even heavy rain effectively.

This means that to provide consistent 5G coverage, cities will need thousands of small transmitters — potentially one every 200–300 metres. Building such dense networks takes time, money, and infrastructure planning, which is why 5G availability still varies between regions.

The Real-World Test

To test 5G performance in practice, we connected to a 5G mast in Manchester. While standing close to the transmitter, the difference was striking — downloads were almost instantaneous. But as we moved further away, the connection weakened, and the device reverted to 4G.

This highlights the current limitation: 5G delivers extraordinary speed, but only within range of its transmitters. As networks expand, consistency will improve — and when it does, the way we use the internet will change forever.

How 5G Will Transform Business

For businesses, 5G isn’t just about faster internet — it’s about smarter operations. With its ultra-low latency and massive data capacity, it will enable real-time analytics, automation, and digital collaboration on a scale never seen before.

Here’s what that could mean for organisations:

  • Manufacturing: Robots and sensors communicating instantly for precision production.

  • Healthcare: Remote diagnostics and robotic-assisted surgeries made reliable and safe.

  • Retail: Immersive virtual shopping experiences and smarter inventory systems.

As the old ISDN network phases out and more industries depend on instant communication, the question for businesses is no longer if they’ll switch to 5G — but how soon.
